Chester, in the end, it does matter

As I was going to grand central terminal a few weeks back, my childhood friend snapped me from overseas in regards to Chester Bennington and how he is no longer a part of our day-to-day reality. Later in the day, As I looked to inform my siblings, I learned that they had attempted to conceal his loss from me as I was excited to take a trip to the city to attend to my affairs. I felt torn, upset, and most of all, I was in both pain and disbelief.

As a child of Asian immigrants, born and raised in the US, Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda had both in a way raised me through being a consistent background noise in my life. I remember having a middle school friend burn me a copy of “Meteora” and “Reanimation” prior to traveling to Pakistan for summer vacation, where I would play LP’s greatest hits and introduce Bennington and Shinoda to my cousins. Jamming to “Collision Course” was my morning routine as I sat on the back of the bus with my walkman whilst being a freshman in High School

Linkin Park’s meshing of resounding lyrics with a pioneered genre of rap / rock is what got me through the challenges of my adolescent years and what I even wrote about in some of my polisci essays in college. I even incorporated Linkin Park in my secondary ed. history-teaching career through making references to the band’s album, “A Thousand Suns”, which inferred in regards to Oppenheimer’s pessimism towards nuclear weapons. While covering World War II, I even incorporated Mike Shinoda’s Japanese-American experience that is cited in “Kenji”, a track featured under Fort Minor, which effectively provides insight in regards to Japanese internment camps.

DFMwlU_UQAIp5pS

Hearing all the tracks throughout these past few weeks has made me realize the anguish that Chester expressed from Hybrid Theory to One More Light. As I scroll through all of Linkin Park’s tracks you can see Chester’s narrative of consistently battling his demons and witness his pleas. What started with the likes of “Crawling”, “In the End”, and “Pushing Me Away”, transitioned into “Somewhere I Belong”, “Nobody’s Listening”, and “Numb”. As the years went by, the tracks had once again taken an even more desperate twist which incorporated ,“Given up”, “Shadow of the Day”, and “Waiting for the End”. Finally, the track titles shifted into “Nobody Can Save Me”, “Good Goodbye”, and “One More Light”. As a Linkin Park fan, in the aftermath of Chester’s passing, one can experience the lyrics from a newer perspective: the lens of Chester’s battles and how his music was in itself, an escape for him, all these years. The reality is that depression is a real monster. Suicide and mental illness are issues that need to be discussed more openly and not left as taboo subjects. Hopefully, Chester Bennington’s story can serve as a means to bring about dialogue in regards to the tangible effects intangible thoughts can cultivate.

LP_Hex-Hands_Final

From Chester’s flame tattoos to his iconic screams, all I can say is, thank you Chester Bennington. He truly is a legend and a generational voice. His void is truly irreplaceable and the updated Linkin Park hexagonal logo is a true reflection of how the band is incomplete without his presence. As an individual in my mid 20s, I was really looking forward to Linkin Park’s North American leg of their “One More Light” tour. It will be hard to move forth whilst realizing that Chester Bennington, lead singer of one of the greatest rock bands in the 21st century, has come and gone, all too soon.

I had the privilege and honor of at least having attending one of his memorials. Seeing fans come together from diverse backgrounds and different age groups made me realize the multigenerational impact Chester and Linkin Park had over the years. His memory will continue to live through his fans.

Rest in peace.

In the end, it does matter.

Twin titans, Pakistan’s one-two punch of Younis Khan and Misbah ul Haq bid farewell to international cricket

2017 has been a tough year. Seeing Shahid Afridi part ways from Pakistan cricket was a difficult pill to swallow. As I witness the end of a chapter in Pakistan cricket, I can’t help but to take out the time to reflect on the journeys of Younis Khan and Misbah ul Haq. The giants have had a monumental impact on Pakistan cricket throughout the 21st century. Seeing both go during the third test match of the ongoing series with West Indies is complex for the Pakistani fan. The boots of Younis Khan and Misbah ul Haq will be difficult to fill for the likes of an Azhar Ali or a Babar Azam.

As a Pakistani American, I first started watching cricket in 2007 and was nervous to witness a post Inzamam and Mohammad Yousuf era. However, under the resolve of Younis, Pakistan clasped the WT20 Championship in 2009. Although, I still credit the back to back man of the match performances of Shahid Afridi towards Pakistan’s championship, I must not overlook the captaincy conducted by Younis Khan during that specific ICC tournament.

Younis, Pakistan’s most successful test cricketing batsman, became Pakistan’s first to hit over 10,000 runs. Over the course of his test career, Younis scored six 200+ scores, and a career high of 313 against Sri Lanka. He exclusively holds the unique record of having scored a century in all eleven test hosting nations in the world. When it comes to hitting tons in the fourth innings, no other batsman in the game has scored more than him with a grand total of five centuries. Although I was not a tremendous fan of his style or approach, I will certainly miss Younis Khan’s presence in Pakistan’s white kit. His contributions to the game and Pakistan cricket will be a difficult summit for any cricketer to top in the several years ahead. Hats off to YK.

Younis Khan

Misbah Ul Haq, another pillar of Pakistan cricket has now retired. Misbah was one of the most scrutinized players for his performance in the 2007 WT20 Final and his approach in taking on India in the 2011 World Cup semifinal in Mohali. However, he remained resilient and persistent in silencing both his critiques at home and abroad. He was given the great responsibility of captaining a Pakistan side that was low on confidence due to the 2010 spot fixing scandal and was always leading from the front as Pakistan continued to play games on the road as a result of the 2009 terrorist attacks on Sri Lanka’s cricket team as they toured Pakistan. Misbah walks from the game as the most winningest captain for Pakistan with 26 test wins, 11 series wins, and bolstering an average of 52.00 as Pakistan’s skipper. Seeing this old war horse hit the quickest half century and test century was admirable. He parts ways from the game as a smasher of the most 6s for a captain in test cricket history. Seeing Misbah bid international cricket goodbye was semi-comical as he hit two 99s in back to back tests, only to get out for 2 in his final innings for Pakistan during his last series. Misbah ul Haq should drop another ten pushups for his total of ten tons in test cricket, what a legend.

Whether or not you are a fan of Pakistan, the contributions of Younis Khan and Misbah Ul Haq towards international cricket cannot go unnoticed by the global cricketing community. Both Younis and Misbah Ul Haq took Pakistan and placed them at World #1 across different formats in their respective careers. Younis placed the cornered tigers at the paramount of International Twenty20 cricket in 2009 and Misbah Ul Haq led Pakistan to being the #1 ranked team in test cricket in 2016. Fittingly, Wisden announces both Younis and Misbah as being amongst their 2017 cricketers of the year.

Witnessing the Pakistani flag being wrapped around the shoulders of Misbah and Younis made them seem as though they were superheroes. Both conclude their cricket careers with a test series victory against the West Indies. A lovely cherry on top for both giants of the game. Champions are forever cemented and both their legacies will continue to shine on Pakistan. Thank you and MISYOU.

Being Muslim American in 2017

I woke up a few Saturdays back to learn that a mosque in Victoria, Texas was set ablaze due to an incident of arson. Prior to sleeping on that very next Sunday night, I was wrapping up my lesson plans for the week. As I was just about to crash for the night, I read a headline involving a shootout at a Québec based Islamic center. This is the reality of a Muslim in America during 2017. Both of these incidences occurred in two North American nations, in the aftermath of my President signing an executive order, which attempted to ban members of my faith background from attaining the American opportunity that shines through the torch of the Statue of Liberty. As a first year teacher in Connecticut, my colleagues would often ask as to how I cope and deal with being a young Muslim-American during this chapter of the American experience. I would respond by saying that I feel as though I am a Japanese American in the United States during World War II or a Jewish man attempting to cope with the rise of Nazism within Germany. Upon Trump’s election, I remember saying the following: Osama Bin Laden took my religion and Donald Trump took my nation.

However with pessimism, one falters, breaks, and can shatter. I am hopeful that the American people will rise. I sometimes think about utilizing the second amendment and picking up arms in defense for the sake of safeguarding my family and members of my Islamic community, as this is my constitutional right. I also seek to attain warmth and love of the American people by participating in protests and practicing my first amendment rights of religious freedom and resisting peacefully. Over the course of the last few weeks, I have protested on the Connecticut State Capitol grounds twice. One was for demonstrating solidarity for the Women’s March to Washington while the other addressed the plight of the Syrian people.

As the son of immigrants and being a Pakistani-American who was born, raised, and educated in Connecticut, it gave me tremendous joy, comfort, and relief that my fellow Connecticut residents protested our President’s executive order at Bradley International Airport. Seeing airports transform into safe havens despite attempts to establish them as detention centers was a heartfelt experience. Seeing my brothers and sisters rise up in the face of bigotry was enigmatic. The Trump phenomena may have inspired those who lit the mosque in Texas; however, it has also contributed to kindling a soft place for Muslim Americans in the hearts of over 50 million Americans, nationwide. I will never forget the outpour of love that my fellow American people had through contributing over $1 Million USD to the Texan mosque and the harmony that the Jewish members of Victoria displayed through giving the keys of the local synagogue to the Muslim community in order to continue services and congregation. We shall overcome.

Windies WT20 crown rattles as Pakistan quakes the side with a 3-0 whitewash

Streak established (4-0), captaincy clicked, and Pakistan fires on all cylinders. Following up to Pakistan being handed the test mace in Lahore for being the World #1 Test squad, Sarfraz Ahmed’s men deliver the green team with a string of W’s by clean sweeping the T20I kings, the West Indies. Imad Wasim’s man of the series performance of consistently picking up scalps will certainly establish the all-rounder’s presence within the squad.

After a poor outing at the World T20 earlier in the year, Pakistan need to work on reestablishing themselves as being contenders for future international competitions. After being world champions in 2009 and strong outings in ICC WT20 Competitions, the green team needs to re-exert itself on the world stage with respect to this limited over format. Pakistani players still hold the top three slots in career T20I wickets with Shahid Afridi,  Umar Gul, and Saeed Ajmal. As Pakistan enters an era beyond such T20I stars, the team will have big boots to fill with respect to the bowling department. The likes of Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad Amir, and Wahab Riaz need to continue to spearhead the pace department. Mohammad Irfan and Junaid Khan are also terrific back up options as well. Part time bowling duties by Shoaib Malik will certainly lend a hand as well. Malik has done well to bounce back into the side as a veteran and his batting abilities empower Pakistan. He fits in perfectly in the T20I squad in the aftermath of Mohammad Hafeez being banned from bowling his overs during the current cricketing season.

252752.jpg

Consistently keeping Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif in the opening slots with Babar Azam at #3 will set a good batting foundation for Pakistan. With Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal, and Sarfraz Ahmad, the team seems to have enough batting power to support the opening cast. The future of Pakistan’s T20I looks to be having a fantastic recovery despite fans having a difficult time coping with a post Afridi squad. Hopefully performances in T20I can translate to Pakistan recovering in ODI matches.

Pakistan v West Indies - T20 International

Pakistan rally to pick up a 1-0 T20I victory against England

Wahab Riaz overcomes his woes and produces his most economical figures in his T20I career by picking up three scalps and not giving up a single boundary. A redemption bowling performance for Pakistan’s spearhead in the bowling department after conceding 100 runs in his 10 over quota during the ODI leg of the tour. After four total series, Pakistan come out of the English summer with two victories, a draw, and a loss. Consolation victories against Ireland (1-0) and a T20I victory against England (1-0) only add more icing to the cake for Pakistan who hold the Test Championship crown in the aftermath of drawing with England (2-2).

251951

Failures by Pakistan’s ODI team adds pessimism to the Pakistani fan’s day. Rumors are that Azhar Ali may just lose out on his captaincy role, especially after Sarfraz Ahmed’s leadership skills led to a 9 wicket win in the T20I matchup against England. Sharjeel and Khalid Latif’s partnership set the tone for Pakistan flexing it’s T20I muscle. A Sarfraz Ahmad led ODI side may just be the right click for the green team to fire on all cylinders and attain qualification for the 2017 Champions trophy and the 2019 World Cup. International ODI competitions without Pakistan are a nightmare that may become a reality if rapid changes are not made. A drought in home matches due to security reasons has certainly demoralized the side to crash in the ICC ODI rankings. Swift changes must be established so that the team can urgently recover in the upcoming months. A string of victories is required for the Pakistan ODI team to be inspired and overcome it’s current situation. Sarfraz Ahmed has to form Pakistan’s fellowship of the ring and take on the role of Frodo Baggins so that his leadership will ultimately help the green team avoid the Mordor of being ousted from ODI competitions.

Consolation “W” for team Pakistan

After a forgetful series from the Pakistan perspective, finally, the green team secure a consolation “W” in order to avoid a 5-0 whitewash against England. Azhar Ali can breath a sigh a relief as he catches a flight back to Lahore or Karachi. I am quite certain that Pakistan’s T2oI captain, Sarfraz Ahmad has cemented his leadership campaign and that he may be tipped by the PCB to pick up skipper duties in all of Pakistan’s limited over games.

Pakistan can take away a few positives from the series. Imad Wasim has successfully proven his ability to bat low in the order and produce much needed runs and also pick up scalps during bowling duties. It finally seems that Pakistan has selected a good all round option in the post Afridi one day squad. Over the course of the ODI series against Ireland and England, Wasim managed to  pick up nine wickets in five matches. His last five batting outings have also resulted in five not outs that have led to a massive boost in his ODI batting average which stands at 76.66 in a total of 11 career ODI matches.

Sarfraz Ahmed, the highest run getter in the series, is a tremendous positive for Pakistan. The green team has certainly found a great wicketkeeping batsman in him. Finally, the trio of Akmals and their glove work duties have been put to rest and dismissed. I personally think that Sarfraz Ahmed deserves to be promoted up in the order so that he can play more freely as opposed to being put in pressure situations. He is not Misbah. Perhaps an opening role with Sharjeel Khan would cause him to produce even higher scores for Pakistan. However, that may lead to unemployment in the limited over sides for the likes of Captain Azhar Ali and Mohammad Hafeez.

Further positives include Pakistan’s wagging tail and heroics of Mohammad Amir and Yasir Shah. The presence of Amir and Shah bolster Pakistan’s bowling unit. It will be exciting to see where these two go with their careers, respectively. I must add that although Wahab Riaz was hammered for three figures for his 10 over quota in the third ODI, he is still Pakistan’s spearhead bowler.

Nevertheless, I am still enjoying 2016 as being a monumental time in Pakistan cricket history. 1992 was legendary for Imran Khan and Wasim Akram’s heroics in leading Pakistan to it’s sole World Cup title. 2009 was memorable for Afridi’s charisma in leading Pakistan to their sole World T20 Championship crown. The present day shows Pakistan as Test #1 in the World and that still seems surreal thanks to Misbah Ul Haq’s commitment in being a giant for securing such a prestigious honor for team Pakistan in world cricket.

“A faster horse” – Why I went with a Ford Mustang as my first car

I am a believer in wanderlust, I find it therapeutic. Life causes anxiousness, stress, and for some: insomnia. We all need a release, I find it in writing but I have been seeking it in travel. I went with a Ford Mustang because I believe that it is the ultimate road trip American car. The Mustang is a U.S. Icon and as Henry Ford put it in his own words, he wanted to provide folks with an access to a “faster horse”. Thus, Ford Motor company developed the Mustang over 50 years ago and it is still having an effect on American culture. The Mustang has been featured in the following Hollywood blockbusters: “The Bullet”, “Gone in 60 Seconds”, “I am Legend”, “Need for Speed”, and beyond. It is no wonder that the Mustang is associated with a rich legacy that is reflective of the American experience and is a part of the American dream. As a history teacher and son of immigrants, I wanted to be a part of that dream. Therefore, I opted to go with the Ford Mustang and become a part of experiencing what American Muscle is all about.

jhgjhg

I want for my future generations to know that I went with my passion and bought a classy car that is rich in history. I may not be an expert on the Mustang but I do look forward to learning more about its legend. Referring back to being a history teacher, I find joy in being able to teach about Henry Ford being one of the first in the world to produce the phenomena of assembly lines and creating cars. I now have one of those cars that make America the great country that it is, and I did not steal that line from Trump!

Since I wanted to use the Stang for daily use, I opted for the Ecoboost Premium in order to get the best fuel economy while still taking pride in knowing that my four cylinder turbo produces more torque and horsepower than the V6. Since its weight is far less than the V8, it comes out to being a rapid fire experience on the freeway.

As a fan of the Dallas Mavericks and Polo Ralph Lauren, the Ford Mustang is a perfect edition in making a trio of stallions that I admire.

The Chai of Madinah

IMG_0224
Mystical Intoxication of the Soul

Desert escapes to Madinah, unplanned and abrupt on some Thursday evenings. A rush of adrenaline as the Arabian driver smashes the accelerator carelessly through the night on the open roads to the city of lights, the city of the Prophet, the messenger of Allah. We don’t care if we live or die on the freeway as we are enroute to a land of mystique that eradicates sorrows. The landscape between Jeddah and Madinah on the Hejazi coast is saturated with blurs of distinct shades of brown. The Arabian sun sets and the darkest shadows appear in the presence of the harsh Hejazi hills. God orders His angels to mix and mesh the colors of the skies from an orange caressing an emerging purple which unify into darkening blue. The terrain looks rough, aggressive, and enveloped with a variety of obstacles for travel. One contemplates on the Hijrah and the ultimate sacrifice of the Muhajirs, who traded all their world possessions in exchange for God’s bounty and grace in the upcoming life. One can’t help holding back tears as you get closer and closer in proximity to the beloved of Allah and the playing of the Qasidah Burdah is engulfing you with a soothing that goes beyond description. Oh travelers to the city of the Prophet, the Chai of Madinah is not a fountain of youth, it is the rather a drink that unlocks and nourishes the grieving soul.

ODI woes for Pakistan in the English summer

The Pakistan cricket team does not seem to be doing too well in its colored ODI kits. Perhaps the management should bring in Pakistan’s Gandalf, Misbah Ul Haq to lead the side in future encounters against world class sides. The bearded fellow has done great for Pakistan cricket and maybe he can brew up a spell to bring back some of Pakistan’s ODI magic.

Pakistan being 0-4 in the series against England means its ICC ODI rankings will crash further. Azhar Ali better get his act together and try to get his unit to avoid a complete wash out against the English Lions. Certainly a fair showing by Sarfraz Ahmed’s T20I leg of the series may tip him into taking over the ODI reigns from Azhar Ali.

251501

It is quite disappointing for Pakistani fans to learn that their bowling unit got thrashed and ultimately amassed the most runs ever to have been conceded by a team in ODI cricket history. Although a fair showing was made in the third ODI from Sharjeel Khan, Pakistan’s opener and Mohammad Amir, Pakistan’s 11th man, the green team’s performance in chasing 445 was lethargic and disgraceful. Perhaps Mohammad Amir should partner up and open with Sharjeel Khan so that more can runs can be amassed by Pakistan’s first three batting slots. Nevertheless, shout out to Mohammad Amir for doing the batsman’s duty and hitting a superb knock of 58 runs, a world record for the last man to bat in an ODI line up.

I think Mohammad Irfan should always be embedded in Pakistan’s limited series from the forefront rather than being left to close a series off  in order to avoid sheer embarrassment. Where is Junaid Khan? It seems the England bowling attack is keen to recruit him to play for the lions. Why doesn’t left arm quick, Sohail Tanvir pick up a recall or Sohail Khan be brought back into the ODI attack? These are some of the questions that the PCB must face. The plummeting of the Pakistan ODI rankings can only be prevented if major interventions are made. Pakistan should not be relying on its bowlers to hold down both ends of the game. Although Pakistan is in a transitional phase and is in a post Afridi, Ajmal, and Misbah era, I certainly miss their presence in steering the squad in the right direction.

Yasir Shah – the embodiment of Pakistan’s cricketing future

Yasir Shah plopping onto the international cricketing scene is truly a sensation at the world stage. Often proclaimed by Shane Warne, Australian leg-spin legend, as the next big thing. In a post Saeed Ajmal era for Pakistan, the green team was in search for a strike spin bowling attach option and Yasir Shah delivered. His enthusiasm, charisma, and passion seems to bolster Pakistani spirits both in the stands and in the Pakistan dugout. His 10 wicket haul at Lords and being ranked as the World # 1 Test bowler demonstrates his accomplishments, especially in the five day format. Picking up 95 scalps in 16 test matches is a monumental feat in a short span by Shah.

Pakistan has had a rich culture of spin bowling in it’s contemporary cricketing history. Saqlain Mushtaq was the founder of the “doosra” and was at one time the quickest bowler to bag 100,150,200, and 250 ODI wickets. Shahid Afridi’s leg-spin bowling led to a colossal career total of 395 ODI wickets , making him the 5th highest wicket-taker in ODI History. With Saeed Ajmal sidelined due to his new action being in effective and Mohammad Hafeez being banned from bowling, Yasir Shah could not have appeared at a better time for Pakistan bowling. At one point, Pakistan’s spin attack of Hafeez, Ajmal, and Afridi was a stranglehold on world class teams. It is now time to watch Yasir Shah blossom into a leg spin giant for the green team.
